Well--the only surefire way to not be put to sleep is to either not be noticed by the pride, or not to look at them at all. Just chalk it up to "fantasy magic stuff" as to how their third eye's doing this, because that's really all it is. And just be happy it doesn't do anything like shoot laser beams or petrify you instead.
