Personality: Two words: Monotone and snarky. Fran is apathetic to everything, mostly commenting and narrating in a detached sort of way about things that happen around him. Very rarely does he start up a conversation by himself but he constantly responds to the words or action of other people—especially when threatened with violence to shut up. (Belphagor’s knives and Mukuro’s trident have both pierced his body multiple times…)
He verbally antagonistic towards other people and has the skill to piss off volatile people with a few sentences. Unfailingly, Fran always manages to poke at peoples sore spots with barbed insults towards their character or history or outright irritating them with his uncaring nature. (Examples: Calling Belaphor ‘Fallen Prince,’ insulting every Varia member with demeaning nicknames, and angering Mukuro with whimsical answers when being questioned about things.) With the volatile people that surrounds him, physical retaliation with sharp object is the norm.
While outwardly Fran is shown to be apathetic and have a trollish nature, the character song Special Illusion provides a rare insight into Fran's mind. Very rarely does Fran ever hint towards the bloodthirstiness that was a trademark in all of the Varia members. It can be inferred from the song that to Fran, everything, including reality, was an illusion that he could shape to his will and people, especially enemies, were like characters in his story.
This is a drastic change from the 8 year old Fran that appeared later in the manga. While their personalities are similar, 8 year old Fran had a childishness to him revolving around supernatural being such as fairies and cavity imps. Somehow within 10 years, Fran had lost that and his thoughts became revolved around blood and death instead. There is a high chance that this is related to the Vongola Hunt that the Millefiore Family started, since Fran was first introduced in a battlefield surrounded by a large forest. It is likely that there were battles within the forest off scene beforehand.
Fran was never shown outright attacking in the Future Arc, only creating illusions depicting faked deaths on two separate occasions—both were rather gruesome. One time he comments on how he made their eyes pop out for a realistic effect. Only during the rare display of his abilities does the anime ever hint to his morbid mind.
