They are somehow prevented. We do have an actual IC/premise reason but for now just consider it "magical pregnancy protection" until that's made ICly known.
As for condoms, they do exist. However, rubber/latex condoms are actually a bit newer and thus a bit more expensive, so the generation prior would be what most stores have.
