On the one hand, he was earnest and sincerely enthusiastic about taking responsibility for the wellbeing of this new world; on the other hand, he developed a habit of keeping most people at arm's length, something that despite his hereditary Elric emotional cageyness he never had much reason to do back home. The increasing relevance of his trust issues came to a head in the Pride plot, where in following his brother's slightly more trusting lead he wound up kidnapped and injured, adding a sizeable lump of negativity to cap off his mostly-positive crystal.
