[ application: original characters ]

— APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN AND WILL BE PROCESSED ON WEEKENDS —

Canon Applications are here

IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.

IMPORTANT: Only the following types of original characters are allowed to be applied for—

  • Pure OC. These are the typical kind of OC that everyone is familiar with. They are characters that are the player's own creation with their own world that is also of the player's design. There is zero relation to any pre-existing canon.

  • MMO OC. MMOs, or Massively Multiplayer Online games, particularly those with a lot of roleplay and character build-up, have existing world building and lore that they have to follow. These characters are created by the player and can have their own story, but they have to follow the rules of the game lore. We consider "main hero" characters as those who are one of many in a great group that influenced the storyline, rather than the singular Great Hero character. This is to help multiple MMO OCs from the same game to have stories that mesh well together. In the sake of fairness to current FFXIV OC players and consistency with previous mod teams' decisions, we do not currently allow FFXIV Warriors of Light.

  • Blank Slate Canon Protagonists. For our criteria, these types of characters are those which you control throughout the game and essentially make the player the main character. They may have a name and a couple of personality traits, but everything else is up to the player to interpret. Examples of these are most of the main characters from Dragon Age, Skyrim, Pokémon, etc. Important: Please note that this category ONLY pertains to the protagonists of canons. This does not allow side characters or other support NPCs as they have set stories and personalities. This section has nothing to do with how much headcanon is used and is only about the purpose and design of the protagonist character.

The following would not be allowed:

  • Fanon/AU OCs. Characters that are based off pre-existing canons or an alternate version of the canon. We would not allow these OCs not because we are against them on principle, but it could cause unwanted confusion and complications with current existing casts. This type of OC would have needed to be allowed from the very beginning so players would know what they were getting into.

  • Game Native OCs. Currently the game is not ready for such a type of character, as it would introduce other complications and worldbuilding that the interested player would have to be aware of. In addition, it would require more close connection with us the mods than we are currently ready for.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:

  • Read the Rules and the Game Information.
  • RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
  • Suggestion: Find some character sheets that have questions directly related to character building. These will help flesh out your application and give some guidelines as to how to write about your character.
  • Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
  • Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
  • You may apply for up to two characters per cycle.
  • Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or some other source material, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
  • Reusing your own applications from other games is allowed. We only ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
  • If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that same period.
  • Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
  • Fill out the form and comment to this entry! All applications must be posted directly to this entry; no linked-in applications allowed.

We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉

Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:
Age:
OC Type: Indicate whether this OC is a Pure, MMO, or Blank Protagonist type of OC. If it is a Blank Protagonist, indicate the canon here.
Point Taken: A sense of time when the character is taken. More applicable to MMO and Blank Protagonist OCs.

World Building:This is separate from the character's personal history. This section is to provide us with information about the character's “canon” in general. We will have no idea what kind of world that the character is coming from, and this is the only place we can learn about it. We don't want an encyclopedia, but we will need to know important details about it so that we can understand the culture the character is coming from and how that will affect how they think and behave. What countries are important? What kind of geography or political climate? Are there any social conflicts that would impact the character or would influence how they view others? For MMO and Blank Protagonist OCs, linking us to wikis will suffice, but feel free to add more to it.

Backstory: While we don't need a play-by-play, what we would like to see includes how the character lived, what choices they've made and why, what events occurred that developed them, and other important facts that will help us understand the character. For MMO OCs: Most MMORPGs will have a set storyline that the player character has the opportunity to play through. Keep in mind that rather there being a singular "Great Hero," all MMO OCs are to be seen as a part of a large group of heroes if you choose to follow the main storyline. Also keep in mind that all MMO OCs will have to follow their game’s canon lore. For example: A character could not save the NPC that canonly died, nor could a mission fail if it is set to succeed. However, your character could have died and or had difficulty fulfilling the mission. It is also possible that your character had no part in the overall game's story and had their own adventures in the world instead. Finally, there can be no romantic or familial relationships with named NPCs.

Personality: We're looking for how they think, why they act the way they do, their strengths, their weaknesses, their thought processes, their opinions, their conflicts, what makes them feel the way they do, their significant traits. When writing your character, be careful! We want to avoid characters that are the super invincible almighty hero that can do no wrong. The one who can charm anyone with a smile, can easily trick and deceive, has the power to bend wills with ease. All characters have flaws—no one is perfect. But more importantly, such infallible characters are not interesting to play and interact with. In short, the character should be realistic, balanced, and well thought out. If we feel that your character does not meet this standard, then we may ask for a revision or reject if it cannot be changed.

Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable if applicable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.

Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.

Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample: We have two sample requirements.

General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.

Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.

The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:

  1. Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
  2. Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
  3. Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Erdrick (The Luminary)
Age: 17
OC Type: Blank Protagonist; Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Point Taken: Post True Ending

World Building:
Endgame infodump on Erdrea's backstory

Erdrea is a fairly vanilla sort of medieval fantasy setting. There are sentient monsters, mermaids, and demons. At the heart of the world is the World Tree, Yggdrasil, which Erdreans see as the origin of all life as well as the place to which all life returns. Many of Erdrea’s regions are analogous to real world places like France, England, Scotland, Cambodia, Persia, Hawaii etc.

Dragon Quest games always have a tendency towards silliness and absurdity so daily life in Erdrea involves things like talking slimes at an all girls school or talking cows that predict the weather. And puns, a lot of puns.

In a time before memory the Yggdrasil's original incarnation, Yggdragon, was felled in combat by an entity called Calasmos, the Dark One. After forming into a tree Yggdragon created the first Luminary specifically to defeat the Dark One in her place but he was murdered before he could complete his destiny.

Backstory: Plot Synopsis
Tiny wiki article on the Luminary himself

Personality:

"Hold on! What's that twinkle in your eye? Do you know something we don't!?"

The man now dubbed "Erdrick" is a major celebrity in his world to the point that his hometown, Cobblestone, is quickly becoming a tourist attraction. People from all over Erdrea want to know more about the Luminary who saved their world from a dark god.

To Erdrea he is courageous, strong, honorable and a living legend, the exact sort of person one would expect to become a savior. Erdrick himself would be the first person to point out that the general population paints, perhaps, too favorable a picture of him. Anyone seeing him as a flawless light being is someone who has never really seen him at all. Despite reputation, he can be a bit of a scoundrel at times. The part of him that painted eyebrows on his best friend's dog as a child did not magically vanish with age. He still enjoys harmless mischief and sometimes refuses to do things at first just to see the looks on people's faces. Of course, he always agrees immediately after to put people at ease again. It's reached a point where sometimes his companions almost expect him to mess with them at first responding to his shakes of the head with "Very funny". He also gambles a bit more than strictly necessary and, prior to his marriage, he enjoyed fooling around with Puff-Puff girls (women who ritualistically press their breasts against people, yes, it's a thing in Dragon Quest) despite the fact that things with them almost never went the way he expected them to. The mischievousness also leads into a playful streak. He is not opposed to putting on feathered spandex and leading a parade while dancing. It's fun! Any new experience is full of wonder for him.

At times, Erdrick's lust for life can cause him to come across as a wide-eyed Pollyanna. He does genuinely love adventure and he smiles a lot. A monster living in the fields of Heliodor even once fell in love with him on sight because he paused a moment to smile at her. He also often talks about hope, it's a topic that is usually on his mind since he has to act as hope incarnate to his people. Beneath this, however, he's developed more realistic views on things than one might expect. During his adventures he's met broken people in broken places and has come to learn that pain is widespread. Happiness to him doesn't mean elimination of pain (light cannot shine without darkness), it means being able to feel joy in the daily wonder of life.

That doesn't mean he leaves people in pain if he can help it. Whenever he finds someone in need he reaches out to them. His travels have taught him how to recognize people who are trapped in bad situations and differentiate them from those who are bad at heart. Even the wicked he can eventually learn to at least tolerate because he is always forgiving. Forgiveness still has to be earned, however, and even if someone is forgiven for a crime Erdrick may not ever learn to actually like them.

His desire to help everyone comes before any instinct to take care of himself.

"You should stop worrying about other people just for once and think about what's best for you."

Joy and wonderment, while important, are not always easy for him. Even during a party he might quietly get up and leave while people are distracted so that he can return to his more somber "hero" work. Because he has to be the Luminary, savior of Erdrea, he tries his best to be the man people expect him to be and this can lead him into trouble and get him twisted up in his own confused emotions. He doesn't tend to express his feelings well if they happen to be negative. If he's in pain he suffers in silence. If he is trapped in a situation where he has to cry he'll turn away from anyone he's with so they can't see his tears. If he happens to know something others don't he'll keep it to himself so as not to upset anyone, even if the wiser move would be to warn people. This tendency causes him to come across as a "strong, silent" type to some. Really the silence sometimes means he's not sure what to do or say so he doesn't say anything. Unfortunately, Erdrick is not particularly cunning or wise. It is not hard to confuse him or lead him astray or trick him into exposing himself somehow and since he doesn't like to let people in on what he's feeling, his friends may not know to step in and help until things have already gone from bad to worse.

"Here I was hoping he'd turn out nice and ordinary, but it seems his grandfather was right all along."

The life of the Luminary is not a life he ever sought out. He was born into it. He never even knew he was the Luminary until he turned sixteen and his powers shot a monster out of the sky. Having never been trained the way he was originally supposed to, Erdrick has drifted through most of his acts of heroism with no real aim. He let his traveling companions make most of the decisions for him, telling him what artifacts he'd need, what legends to pay attention to and where to go. It wasn't until the Lord of Shadows was finally defeated that Erdrick truly felt like the Luminary and had the confidence to make a decision for himself: Whether or not to go back in time and prevent the Lord of Shadows from ever rising in the first place. He did this, knowing it was a trip he'd have to take alone, knowing that it would be painful. Without guidance, however, he very nearly made things in the new timeline much worse, allowing for a being far more dangerous than the Lord of Shadows to take over. He did eventually beat this being, the Dark One, as well. As it turned out, the Dark One was who Erdrick had been born to slay all along.

Part of the reason he keeps things to himself is this trip back in time. There is a timeline now where the Lord of Shadows won, rose to power and was eventually cast down but only Erdrick consciously remembers it happening. This was when the World Tree fell, he lost his friends, and he became traumatized, reliving the nightmare of the events surrounding the Fall over and over in his mind. He could barely respond to people trying to reach out to him and spent months floating around in a dissociative state before his power awoke again and, with it, brought hope that he could set things right. This was a time where he suffered immensely but since nobody else remembers it, he feels alone. It's not something that tends to drag him down on a daily basis, he doesn't like being dragged down by anything at all, but it does bother him sometimes. He tries to forget about it but it comes back to him in dream-like flashes.

Erdrick had to learn for himself what it meant to be the Luminary and at times it made him question things about himself. This was rough for him as he is otherwise not prone to introspection. Being told he is the reincarnation of Erdwin, the first Luminary, was enough to make him wonder if anything he ever did had meaning. How much of who he was was determined by his being the Luminary? Could he be himself or was everything just Yggdrasil's will? Eventually he decided that even if his power was inherited from Erdwin, he used it differently and was indeed his own person. His companions helped him come to this conclusion since even though they came to him because he was the Luminary, they stayed by him and fought at his side because of the man he was beyond that.

"Now, let's get down to business shall we? We've been worried that your life might be lacking purpose now that things have quieted down."

Learning what his own power meant did not mean the end to the existential questions. As the Luminary, Erdrick has been told, repeatedly, that defeating the Dark One is the reason he was born. Now that the Dark One is dead, Erdrick isn't sure what to do with himself. Ideally, he would like to live the rest of his days in Cobblestone with his wife. He'd go on adventures sometimes but always return to a warm hearth there. It's what he wants but he wonders if his duty is to rebuild the fallen kingdom of Dundrasil. He is, after all, the kingdom's last prince and would be the heir to the throne if the place hadn't been sacked in his infancy. Should he return there and continue the dynasty? He's not sure.

He almost feels more lost now than he did when he first learned he was the Luminary.

Abilities:
Being the Luminary means Erdrick has immense powers over holy light energy. This light is an intrinsic part of him that can never be taken nor destroyed though his wells of it can be drained, sometimes even by force. He just recently gave his light to Serenica, turning her into a pseudo Luminary so she could go back into the past and be with the one she loves. Given how Luminary light is often said to work, his power will come back to him but upon entering the game he will be nerfed compared to what he is capable of at full radiance. How long it takes for his light to return will depend on in game factors since it tends to come back faster when he is under threat.

Upon arrival he will possess the following abilities:

Sword Mastery: Erdrick is a talented swordsman. He can fight sword and board style with a shield, dual wield or fight with a two handed weapon nearly the length of his own body. His natural agility allows him to leap around a battlefield to avoid enemy attacks.

Excellent Memory: He can sit with a book and remember entire passages by heart in enough detail to accurately reproduce recipes. Not a particularly useful ability it's there.

Zoom: The ability to teleport in a flash of light but only to places he has already been.

Elemental Magic: The ability to set things aflame, create minor explosions or call lightning. This is pretty much standard offensive mage stuff though he doesn't have the measured control a mage would.

After his light wells up again he'll regain access to:

Healing: Erdrick's light allows him to heal himself and others from even grievous injury.

Imbued Weapon: He can channel elemental magic through his swords.

Quadraslash: Pulls a giant, ethereal blade of light from the sky and hammers it into enemies.

Radiance: The light Erdrick wields is not sentient but does have instincts. The most powerful attacks he can use are actually from the light acting up in an attempt to either preserve him or destroy a dark entity. This means Erdrick himself doesn't have much control over it. It usually takes the form of light emanating from his hands but in extreme cases can actually cause bolts of light to fire out of the sky and hit enemies. Stronger enemies lose any enchantments or magical defenses they might have had. Weaker enemies are flash-fried on the spot.

Uncanny Luck: Sometimes the light kicks in to preserve him by simply moving him out of harm's way in situations where he should logically be killed. This can take many forms such as him dodging attacks he may not usually be able to or surviving a leap off a cliff. When he nearly drowned the light found a way to mingle with the natural magic of Nautica and turn him into a fish.

True Sight: The ability to see certain things in their truest forms as well as see spirits (all with player permission).

Kaclang: Turns a friendly target into metal, preventing them from moving but also making them invulnerable. This state only lasts a few minutes.

Even with his power intact he is a bit more powerful on paper than in practice. He can do a lot and is strong but the light comes wrapped up in a very mortal shell. He has all the usual physical weaknesses of a normal human.

Alignment:
Erdrick definitely could fall under a number of different Arehtei but will come in aligned to Peromei. His personal journey has taken him throughout the emotional corners of her domain. He was a bright eyed youth full of wonder who experienced immense trauma and despair, rallied, and felt hope again. The light he wields is often said to be the light of hope.

Other:
He will come in with the Supreme Sword of Light still on his person. This is a version of the Sword of Light that Erdrick himself forged. The original blade is enshrined within Yggdrasil. Despite its name, the Supreme Sword of Light doesn't quite have the same holy magic around it that the original does. It's still a very sharp and well made sword, though. It can break curses and other "evil" effects (with player permission of course).

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

General Sample: Here

Emotion Sample: Here

Note: In the TDM this character is referred to as "Eleven" which is considered by most people to have been his name prior to earning the title "Erdrick" from Yggdragon at the very end of the game (he has no canonical name otherwise). In Emp he might go between the two names, thinking of himself as "Eleven" but referring to himself as "Erdrick" when speaking to others. It will depend on CR somewhat too.

Questions: None.
