[ applications: canon characters ]

— APPLICATIONS ARE ALWAYS OPEN

Reserves OPEN
OC Applications are here

IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:

  • Read the Rules and the Game Information.
  • Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
  • RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
  • Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
  • Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
  • You may apply for up to two characters per month.
  • Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
  • Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
  • Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
  • If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
  • Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
  • Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.

We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉

Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:

Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.

Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.

Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.

Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.

Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

We have two sample requirements.

General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.

Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.

The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:

  1. Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
  2. Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
  3. Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.

Questions: If you have any questions, ask them here.

Here are the revisions that were requested! I will touch on a couple things that were already mentioned in the original app to help make points or because I felt I could touch upon them better.

There are a couple wiki links for Coran. They are here and here, but they don’t really have much information so I wish to expand on them.

Background

In ways that Coran contributed to the story in seasons 1 and 2 is more of a support character and support role. When he and Allura are awaken after 10,000 years he was the main person who got the Castle of Lions space worthy again after it had been grounded and pretty much ignored for those ten thousand years. He’s the one who knows the castle almost completely in and out. There are still things even he doesn’t know about the castle, but it was his grandfather that built it and he’s the one who spent the most time in the castle out of those who are currently using it.

Coran doesn’t usually join the direct fighting, however, on occasion he does bring the ship in to provide back up. He also is the one who controls the ship’s particle barrier to protect it from enemy fire. Princess Allura is the one who usually drives the ship and will command him where and when to fire, but when she’s not on the ship Coran is more than capable of doing these things on his own. When she was captured by the Galra Coran came in with the ship, guns blazing, to take back his princess.

He is also the man who usually has some sort of world history or knowledge that will help the team. He knows how to perform the ceremony to collect crystals from Balmeras. These are what power the Castle of Lions. He knows how to get scaultrite from a Weblum. These are used to make the lenses that allow them to make and use wormholes. Coran was alive when the Lions were first built and the first time they came together to become Voltron.

One other big way that he's helped over the course of the two seasons is he was the one overseeing and helping build the largest wormhole device ever made to be used in their big plan against Zarkon. By taking command over the building this allowed the other paladins to collect the other necessary components to complete their plans. He was also able to offer his expertise with taking care of the smaller wormhole to the bigger version.

I’ll touch a bit more on some of the ways he contributed to the story in the following update to his personality. Focusing on the strength and weakness in the show.

Personality:

Coran has several strength and weakness during Voltron: Legendary Defender. One of his strengths is how quickly he can bounce back from situations and always seems to have spare energy. Even if a Galra ship is blasting away at the Castle and he’s shouting out systems that are falling offline as soon as someone suggests another plan he can rein in his panic quickly to do his part. The bravest man would be nervous and frightened when facing the possibility of their death so Coran is not weaker for not being stoned face, but being able to put all those worries to the side and not allowing them to stop him from doing his part in the fight is a true strength.

The best example of this is during season one when a Galra commander, Sendak, attempts to take over the castle. He does this by sending in a bomb that destroys the castle’s crystal power source. During the explosion Lance throws himself in front of Coran to protect him from the blast. Lance ends up being seriously hurt, the castle being without power so they can’t get the Lions out of the castle, and their new allies’ village is being attacked by Galra as well. Everyone, understandably, panics; how were they going to stop all these problems happening at once?

Despite still being lightly injured in the blast Coran takes charge. He doesn’t have a plan exactly, but he gets the team to stop panicking and start thinking of the tasks at hand. To get out of this situation they need to get the power back on. That will get the healing pods for Lance working and also let the Lions out. They need a new crystal. This requires a ship that can go get one. Luckily Pidge can provide one and this gets the team focused aon finding solutions instead of focusing on what is wrong.

Luckily for the team Coran can be a wealth of knowledge. This is at times both a strength and a weakness. For example he knew where to get the crystal that was needed to power the ship again. Because of his knowledge of Balmeras where the crystals come from they were able to quickly find where to get a new one which also led the team to meet Shay and her people who were in slavery under the Galra.

Other times his knowledge can hurt the team. A particular example from the show is when Zarkon appears to be tracking the team and the relentless pursuit is taking a toll on not only the people, but the ship too. Pidge actually suggests right away the way that Zarkon is tracking them. Namely through the Black Lion that he use to pilot as a paladin, but Coran brushes this suggestion away. He says that there is no way a paladin can connect to a lion from such a great distance away. (They were several light years away so it’s hard to blame him.) Of course, Pidge is eventually shown to be right, but not until after Princess Allura and Keith are put in danger.

Sometimes when Coran does get some information wrong it’s because his information is painfully out of date. He at times forgets that he’s been asleep for 10,000 years. For example; while they were trying to outrun Zarkon during his relentless pursuit the lenses used for the castle to be able to use wormholes were damaged. Coran suggests going to a swap moon to get new ones. A place he remembers as being so dangerous he refuses to allow Allura to come with them. Once they arrive at the actual swap moon it turns out to be an ordinary mall these days.

Despite the clear evidence in front of him that things had change drastically from what he remembered Coran stubbornly insists the mall is still a dangerous place. While the others ditch their terrible disguises that Coran put together for them he stays in his the whole time. He also treats the help desk person as if she knows where to find the black market and only grows frustrated when she has no idea what he’s talking about. Storming off thinking that she was playing dumb instead.

In the end he does find what they need because he didn’t lose focus in the mall like the others did, but he could have found it without the disguise. Coran rarely gets too badly punished in the show when he does get things wrong. This is partly because he’s the comic relief of the show, but mostly because he’s also very confident. Even if he gets something wrong he tends to shrug it off. At worse being embarrassed for a few moments. Being wrong means he can correct himself in the future. He can learn, grow, and then laugh about it. Like, remember that time they all nearly died when they tried to wormhole using temporary lenses by standing in the chamber and holding them? Hahaha, wasn’t that a great time? Lance you twitched out of place and nearly died! Hilarious!!!

Coran being energetic in this way can also be a weakness. When he sets his mind on something he can at times become a bit blinded to those around him. A plan that might kill them all, but needs to be done? He's not going to question it and just go for it. Maybe without fully explaining the situation to those joining him in it. He can chatter on about alien creatures and use words/terms that the others may not understand or have any point of reference for. Never stopping to think about the people who can't follow along with what he's talking about. This can lead to communication issues at times which can lead people into dangerous situations like replacing an import ship part incorrectly or a misinterpretation that an animal is friendly when Coran actually means it's really dangerous.

Coran has also been an emotional support for the team in both season 1 and 2. Mostly to Princess Allura who he watched grow from a baby to the leader she is by the end of season 2. He is there as a comforting figure when she is homesick for her father and their planet they lost. He even helps her to break from a mind control she was under from a Galra virus that had spread through the Castle of Lions. She was thinking she was on Altea; it was Coran who told her to smell the flowers and realise they didn’t smell at all like the flowers they knew. This allowed her to break out of the spell before they were driven into an exploding star.

Princess Allura isn’t the only one who gets Coran’s emotional support. He will offer it to any of the paladins. Either by them coming to him or if he notices that they may need it. Such as when during a party he sees the usually very social Lance leave on his own looking upset. Coran follows the boy to speak with him so he’s not left on his own.

Despite any flaws he may have Coran has proven to be important member to Team Voltron and has help to defend the universe!
