[ applications: canon characters ]

— APPLICATIONS ARE ALWAYS OPEN

Reserves OPEN
OC Applications are here

IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:

  • Read the Rules and the Game Information.
  • Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
  • RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
  • Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
  • Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
  • You may apply for up to two characters per month.
  • Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
  • Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
  • Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
  • If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
  • Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
  • Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.

We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:

Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.

Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.

Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.

Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.

Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

We have two sample requirements.

General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.

Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.

The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:

  1. Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
  2. Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
  3. Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Lotor
Age: Unknown
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: Season 4 Episode 6 “New Defender”

Background:
Here

Personality:
"There's always two kinds; there's the soldier villain — who fights the hero with his hands; and then there's the real threat — the brilliant and evil archenemy — who fights the hero with his mind." -Unbreakable

Lotor is a far cry from the tyrannical dictator that his father his, and his exile and execution order show just how strained and distant their relationship to one another is. Rather than rule through strength and keep all others beneath his heel, Lotor would rule through manipulation, deceit, and strategy. He is analytical and directs his thoughts inward rather than outward, seemingly reserved with no desire for attention or glory. Strategic, knowledgeable, and adaptable, Lotor shows an ability for taking ideas from abstraction to execution and completion. As shown in his plan to not only acquire a transreality comet using Voltron but having the foresight and ability to design ships from it that would be comparable to the lions that form Voltron; all without his plans being discovered by his mother or father until the very end. Even when his plans are hindered, he is able to reassess his situation and analyze the situation to find an alternative means to reach his goal; as seen when the teledove lens was destroyed and he resorted to using the original portal in the ruins of his homeworld. This high level of analysis and strategic planning mean that Lotor holds himself to a high expectation of near perfection, as he does with those serving him as well, expecting efficient use of materials and the exact execution of plans laid out for them.

At the same time, he is also shown to be open-minded and pragmatic as demonstrated in his recapture of Puig and in the manner in which he leaves planets that are captured to govern themselves. He does not hold fast to Galra ways of an absolute rule without mercy, or the ideals that all other races are inferior; all of his generals being half-Galra. This is likely from the fact that Lotor himself is half-altean and half-galra. He is also able to empathize and understand the decisions that others will make, and offer, simple solutions and look at the reality of how something will be perceived by others. Emotions and ties do not play into his decisions so much as what the perceived impact will, whatever approach is the most sensible and realistic is the one that Lotor prefers to take despite the situation. This leads to decisive and quick decisions that others may have difficulties accepting or processing; despite the loyalty and bond to his general Narti he cut her down without hesitation when concluding it was through her that his mother was spying on their movements. It is also highlighted in his decision when in his first encounter he simply aims to draw out all of the lions after the Black lion had not been spotted and choosing to retreat when it was finally present rather than chancing a theoretical victory that might have been possible. Lotor approaches reality as one would a chess board, always seeking strategies that have a high payoff, and always devising contingency plans in case of error or adversity.

This pragmatic view combined with the intellectual analysis of situations affords Lotor an air of confidence and charisma. He is able to appear attentive and attuned to the needs and desires of a crowd and is able to use that to persuade them, to bring them around his view so that they will follow and rely on him. He is able to speak eloquently while remaining simple enough to captivate those around him, keeping his words concise despite the lofty ideas and goals that they convey. He is able to set scenarios to where any outcome will be of some benefit to him, and in the event that the unexpected does occur he is able to quickly analyze the situation and adapt his plans to minimize loss. Using a strategic approach and objective view of the reality of the empire, he is able to adapt and shape the traditions he disagrees with in most cases to suit his needs; as seen in the challenge of Throk. This self-confidence, sometimes mistaken for simple arrogance by many, is actually of a very specific nature; its source lies in the specialized knowledge Lotor has accumulated over time.

Lotor is of the type that will elaborately analyze all destinations and possible paths to their desired goals, plan for and expect obstacles, then execute their strategy in a nearly flawless and ruthlessly pragmatic manner. Mercy will be shown to those who do not show prolonged opposition, so long as it is strategic to do so.

Abilities:
Intellect/Tactical Planning: Unlike his father who rules and fights solely through brute strength, Lotor is a tactical fighter and ruler. This is shown through the strides that he takes to ensure that his enemy is caught in a disadvantageous situation when Lotor confronts them; as seen with his challenge to Throk as well as his luring the lions to a planet where their sensors and instruments would not properly work.

Stamina/Agility: During a fight or extreme situation Lotor has demonstrated exemplary stamina and agility, such as being able to fight two skilled warriors in solo combat back-to-back without appearing winded when both opponents are shown to be sweating and out of breath. In addition is able to withstand the extreme heat and gravitational pressure of close proximity to a star that left several of Zarkon's ships disabled and unresponsive despite having a greater orbit. His agility is shown in the ability to easily dodge attacks and in the quick and fluid manner in which he moves; in addition to being double jointed and having the ability to hyperextend his limbs.

Swordsmanship: Lotor is a master swordsman and carries a double-edged sword that is custom fitted to him. He is able to easily dodge and parry attacks even from much stronger opponents and can turn their attacks back on them. He is also able to use his sword to break and cut through the weapons of his opponents or disarm them in other manners.

Piloting: Though not likely relevant to gameplay, Lotor is shown to be an exceptional piolet. He is seen piloting his ship regularly and is able to easily maneuver through environments that others find impossible or challenging.

Alignment:
Piphron: Lotor is distrustful of others, only extending it to a few select others and never absolutely. He believes that even those he is closest to can and will betray him if they must; as is shown by his lack of surprise or anger towards his generals when they turned on Lotor to save themselves. As such he holds in suspicion quite regularly and is rather skilled at deception himself.

When it comes to other people, Lotor does not develop attachments to any single individual that can't be quickly and easily severed. A possible result from his long-term exile from the Galra empire, or due to personal past experiences, it is shown that while he is very charismatic and easily sways public opinion he does not form attachments. Lotor instead keeps people close to him with false charm and the illusion of trust and compassion; revealing only what is necessary to them and relying on them to do what he has set forth. At no point though does he fully trust or depend on any other person. As is demonstrated by the lack of emotion at the betrayal of his generals, but also in the manner in which he addresses his mother and father. Unlike what many would think of with family, Lotor has no meaningful relationship with either of his parents; showing a hidden loathing for his father's rule and a combination of distrust and disdain towards his mother.

At his best Lotor sees someone as useful and a temporary ally. At his worst though, Lotor can be manipulative and spiteful towards those who cross him. After discovering Throk's plan to overthrow him, Lotor makes it a point to defeat and humiliate the other thoroughly. Even after he has defeated Throk in combat and made him swear allegiance, Lotor assigns him to one of the worst posts in the Galra Empire. A post that he later attacked and stole the teledove lens from before it was destroyed, later watching and seeming to enjoy his torture and death during questioning.

As for his interest in ruling his father's empire, Lotor openly states that Zarkon can have the throne. Instead of ruling planets, Lotor's interest seems to rather lie in the exploration for ways to reach the space between realities to harness the unlimited quintessence. Lotor has done research on Voltron and its origins, and after he located the second comet of similar origin begins to commission ships that will be as powerful and will also be capable of passing between realities. His motive for traveling between realities isn't entirely clear, with the reason that he provides for other being the harnessing of unlimited quintessence. Prior to this research though, Lotor prioritizes his own survival through any means and cost.
