[ applications: canon characters ]

— APPLICATIONS ARE ALWAYS OPEN

Reserves OPEN
OC Applications are here

IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:

  • Read the Rules and the Game Information.
  • Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
  • RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
  • Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
  • Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
  • You may apply for up to two characters per month.
  • Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
  • Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
  • Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
  • If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
  • Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
  • Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.

We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉

Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:

Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.

Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.

Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.

Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.

Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

We have two sample requirements.

General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.

Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.

The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:

  1. Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
  2. Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
  3. Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Remember that we ask for samples that show 1) core character portrayal and 2) some use of emotions, such as environmental effect. You can also use the same sample source for both, just make sure to directly link or quote the emotion portion. We highly encourage using the Test Drive, and you can use prompts from the Test Drives, Intro Logs, and the Task board if you need them. Refer to the main application page for links and more suggestions.

General Sample: "Let me guess, you'd just been in the middle of a nap when you found yourself rudely awakened here?"

At the time, Sion had almost immediately regretted asking the question, though he hadn't let his expression waver, had forcefully kept his thoughts--and more importantly, his feelings--as calm and clear as he could manage. Even so, hearing the answer a part of him had already been half-expecting had been a blow that left him mentally reeling, momentarily stunned as the implications sank home. Too stunned to even properly react, that would come undoubtedly come later, once the shock had worn off a bit.

He'd smiled and lied when the question was turned back on him, of course, then came up with an excuse as to some matter he had to attend to elsewhere that sounded enough like work to ensure Ryner would have no interest in trying to tag along anyway. Then another smile and a wave and a promise to meet up later, and now Sion strode through the streets alone, deeply occupied with his own thoughts.

He doesn't know. Ryner doesn't know. The thought ran round and round in Sion's head as he walked. Not what happened, what's happening. Not...

"Not what I did to him," Sion muttered quietly to himself, unconsciously clenching his fist at the thought.

So preoccupied was he that he almost didn't realize someone was addressing him.

"Excuse me, are you all right?" the woman asked. It wasn't anyone Sion recognized, probably one of this world's native inhabitants, if he didn't miss his guess. As he paused and turned to face her, a quick, discreet glance told him that he hadn't been nearly as careful as he'd thought, to judge by the increasing pattern of cracks in the street's paving stones, neatly marking path he'd just traversed. Immediately, Sion clamped down on his thoughts, forcing his troubled musings aside as he gave the women an apologetic smile.

"I'm fine, thank you," he said politely. "My apologies for causing you concern."

The woman didn't look entirely convinced. "You sure?" she asked, not nearly so subtly glancing down at the marred road surface, herself.

Sion nodded, his smile never faltering. "Of course. I merely got a little lost in thought," he lied. No need to add to her worries, Sion thought, forcing himself to focus on another topic. Ah, this city is so peaceful, isn't it? And so straightforward...

"Well, if you say so..." the woman said, a little skeptical.

"I am," Sion reassured her. "I truly hope I didn't cause you any inconvenience." His earnestness was unfeigned; he truly had no desire to cause harm to, well, anyone, whether directly or indirectly. That sincerity seemed to finally get through to the woman, and she nodded.

"All right," she said. "Have a good day, then!"

"You as well," Sion replied with a gentle smile, then as soon as he was sure the woman was on her way, turned and continued on with a quickened stride. While his concern and care were genuine, they warred with the feelings his earlier conversation had stirred, and it would be best, he decided, if he were to be somewhere that didn't risk causing... problems, for others here. Fortunately, if he recalled correctly, there were woods outside the city bordering the lake; something like that ought to suffice.

Somehow, through sheer willpower and carefully guarding what he allowed himself to even think about, Sion made it outside the city without further incident. He even managed to get some distance into the woods, the trees and distance muffling any sound of the city behind him, before he just couldn't take it any longer.

"Dammit..." he murmured, squeezing his eyes shut and leaning against a tree, not yet aware how the moss at his feet begin to shrivel, his sense of despair starting to spread like a creeping miasma. Why did it have to be this way? He'd been prepared for the consequences of his decision, of what he'd done, he'd known there was no turning back from the moment he'd realized he had to betray his best friend in such a manner. But this... Somehow, impossibly, Ryner and Ferris had no idea what happened. As if not only had they all been whisked away across dimensions from one world to another, but from one time as well. It explained why something had seemed off to Sion when he'd run into them here, but the truth of the situation was hard to fully wrap his mind around.

Sion clenched a fist and pounded it against the tree's trunk in frustration; preoccupied as he was he didn't yet notice how the bark cracked and sloughed off as though rotted. "Ryner, you idiot...." he muttered, though he wasn't really Ryner's fault at all, he knew. If anything, Sion only had himself to blame for winding up in a situation like this, and blaming himself came all too naturally. But what was he to do? He couldn't possibly tell Ryner, not now... Even if it somehow didn't break Ryner's heart, Sion simply couldn't put himself through that. Not when he already knew how badly he'd fail, how he'd already failed.

"I'm just a coward after all, aren't I? A coward they'd be better off without..." Before he could finish the thought, there was a cracking sound from above, followed shortly by the crash of a tree branch hitting the ground nearby. Startled out of his train of thought, Sion finally took in his surroundings, noticing the small circle of dead and dying plants around him. Immediately, he felt a pang of guilt--he hadn't meant to do anything of the sort, he'd been trying to avoid this sort of thing--but almost as quickly realized that sort of thinking was just making it worse, wasn't it?

So once again he clamped down on those feelings, the self-loathing, the guilt, the sense of despair, trying to shove them out of the forefront of his mind through sheer force of will. It was hardly the first time he'd had to set his feelings aside, and given the peculiar nature of this place, it clearly wouldn't be the last. Still though... Sion looked around again, a bit calmer now (for the moment, at least) and couldn't help grimacing a little as he realized this was the best he could do, he simply couldn't summon the right state of mind to reverse the damage. The thought sent another tug of guilt, though he was on guard now and purposefully brushed it aside.

He'd just have to guard his thoughts even more carefully than before, is all. Especially around Ryner. There was no reason to let Ryner know, to even suspect, that anything was wrong. So, Sion just had to take care to keep his own thoughts in check as long as he was in this world. It would be the best for everyone that way.

Emotion Sample: Taken from the sample above:
