[ applications: canon characters ]
OC Applications are here
IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.
Before applying, please be sure to read the following:
We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!
⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉
Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"
⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉
Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:
Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.
Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.
Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.
Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.
Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.
⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉
We have two sample requirements.
General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.
Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.
The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.
The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:
Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.
Questions: If you have any questions, ask them here.
Clean copy and paste form here:
(first application page has been archived and can be found here.)
Before applying, please be sure to read the following:
- Read the Rules and the Game Information.
- Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
- RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
- Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
- Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
- You may apply for up to two characters per month.
- Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
- Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
- Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
- If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
- Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
- Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.
We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:
- Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
- Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
- Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Regarding Cloche's Song Magic and her Cosmosphere: As it ties in with her Cosmophere (or Soulspace) I'll kill two birds with one stone here - Song Magic is borne out of a reyvateil's innermost feelings and emotions, and new magic is created (or improved) by changes in her Cosmosphere. In a battle, a reyvateil will sing a basic "battle hymme" borne out of the memories, feelings, and anything else she felt when the song was created. Every Hymmnos song, whether its one crafted by the reyvateil herself or one that was created and made into a Hymn Crystal where the feelings for the song created are stored. All a reyvateil has to do is have the song downloaded into them, and they automatically can detect what kind of feelings were in the song and how to translate them into a song. Every Song is different in terms of how a reyvateil sings it; it's dependent on how the reyvateil interprets the feelings that were put into the song itself. The best example of this is the song EXEC_PURGER/. - Depending on the route you take in the first game, either Misha or Aurica will download the song and sing it, and both interpret the song's emotions differently. All Songs, whether they are for battle or a special song from a crystal are sung in Hymmnos - there are many dialects that can be sung in should the reyvateil know them. All reyvateils from the area in the first game as well as non-I.P.D reyvateils in Metafalss sing in Standard Note, I.P.Ds sing in Pastalian, and the native Beta-types of Sol Cluster sing in Clusternian Note - Sol Cluster doesn't have many 3rd gen types (to note: though Cloche is not a 3rd generation reyvateil, that refers to a girl who may either have a reyvateil mother and a normal human father, or if one or both parents carry a reyvateil gene but the mother did not turn into a reyvateil, it can be passed to their daughter resulting in a 3rd gen reyvateil.)
Present in Metafalss is the ability for two reyvateils to sync up their singing for stronger Song Magic. Jacqli, Luca, and Cloche all have the ability to sync with each other for a Synchronity Chain which opens up either a stronger version of the song that the girls are singing, or an entirely new song between them (unlocked in certain trees of magic.)
More reading on Song Magic (with a lot of technical stuff) here - it mentions Dualstalling, which requires grathnode crystals and dropping it in a bath for a reyvateil to strengthen themselves. A grathnode crystal is a stone that contains special powers and are native to Ar Ciel as a whole. They have other uses for crafting and the like too!
Here is a bit more on the Hymmnos language, with a lot more technical talk - it's its own constructed language so after the Dialects section it goes into how to construct stuff.
And if you want to hear the difference between Misha's Purger and Aurica's Purger (or just to hear some amazing music), they can be found here for Misha, and here for Aurica.
A reyvateil's Cosmosphere is, in incredibly basic terms, a computer server where the more AI parts of a reyvateil are connected together. This server houses a manifestation of all reyvateils (Alphas, Beta-types, and 3rd gen) subconscious 'world' within their mind. In this world are manifestations of their desires, dreams, fears, worries etc. which for the Diver going into a reyvateil's mind, usually means they need to be trusted by the reyvateil both consciously and subconsciously. Once there, the Diver will perform a Paradigm Shift - in other words, change their outlook on something, or help them with a problem they were struggling with but never let her friends know about for various reasons. In short, you get to play reyvateil therapist! While you interact with a manifestation of the reyvateil and anyone she perceives on the outside world, this is also how magic manifests within the reyvateil. In all three games, they are a fear or a hope that can be boon or burden until they come to terms with whatever that level (1-8) is presenting. The 9th level is as far as a Diver can go as any further levels are actually dangerous to bother the reyvateil and whoever she's trusting. Generally a 'wedding' is done on that level, more symbolical than anything, showing the level of deep trust and understanding between the reyvateil and her partner. Some reyvateils are able to modify their own Cosmosphere. Jacqli and Luca can both do this as shown in canon - Jacqli is able to have her levels 1-4 show as a silly dating sim game and nothing further shown to anyone, and Luca essentially has a firewall built in to only show a static, separate space as she's a Dive Therapist. It actually takes a lot of training to be able to do any of that, so a majority of reyvateils are unable to do this, Cloche included.
In a Cosmosphere, the reyvateil doesn't know what actually happens there, or what her subconscious is showing to their partner - they only feel the change when their partner performs a Paradigm Shift. They will get their magic and a costume (Cloche's are here) which in a gameplay sense are to boost stats in battle. The girls can change into these costumes at will as they're tied to magic. I want to say I linked to Cloche's Song Magic before, but just in case it was just the visuals, her magic and its effects at a base level (with no amplification with how long she's sung to power it up into a second or third form) are here.
The last thing that reyvateils, sans I.P.Ds, have are Mind Guardians. They exist to protect the reyvateil and will kick out a Diver should they be putting their reyvateil in danger. They can be just about anything - other reyvateils have Guardians that were items that had sentimental value take shape (Don Leon is a good example.) Since I.P.Ds are linked to the Infel Phira and it's not quite on the same level as an actual SH server as the rest of the reyvateils are connected to, they're lacking in what they actually have in a Cosmosphere. They have no Mind Guardian (Cloche is a special case due to *spoilers* but she's also the 'I.P.D. Queen' which means she is able to control the Infel Phira. In order to do that, Infel was the one who bestowed those powers on Cloche - and any I.P.D Queen in the past) and at Level 7 they have a Boundary Gate not present in regular reyvateils. While non-I.P.D reyvateils have a way to block off any backwash of emotions or other reyvateils sneaking in to someone else's Cosmosphere, I.P.Ds really don't have that same security. I'll cover that in more detail a bit later.
In Cloche's case, her very first Dive with Croix resulted in her kicking him out within a 7 second time limit because of her fears of what he would see she was actually like - despite being jealous that he had done a Dive into Luca. They had to cheat the system in order for Croix to Dive properly, and once there he was able to trigger a Paradigm Shift by helping Cloche start facing her fears and recovering suppressed memories she had to make her fractured self whole again. These memories were mainly about her treatment by the Grand Bell, and who she really was (Leyka Trulyworth) and her coming to terms with that.
More info on a Cosmosphere can be found here; from the section Formation and on it gives more in depth info than what I covered here. Each Cosmosphere takes on a different look depending on a reyvateil and how far someone has actually Dived - for a visual, Cloche's Level 1 versus her Level 9 are statically the same, but are visually different. It does change throughout the Dives, but just the before and after are enough I think. :P
Regarding I.P.Ds, Replekia, and the Infel Phira: As mentioned before, I.P.Ds have Boundary Gates at their Level 7 Cosmospheres and strong emotions can backwash into any other I.P.D in their SH server, the Infel Phira. This can cause a Metafalss-only 'disease' among them called an I.P.D Outbreak. If they have a positive reaction to any strong negative feelings, they are suseptible to have an outbreak and they go berserk. One of the mini-games(?) is to stop the I.P.Ds as you hear about outbreaks to contain them, but then also to do Dive Therapy to actually cure it, going against the Grand Bell in helping them instead of imprisoning them. In basic terms, the disease is a corrupted HDD section that instead of being repaired is partitioned off from everything else. Dive Therapy actually repairs the corruption instead of partitioning it off. During an outbreak, a Positive-Reacting I.P.D will use varying degrees of power in Song Magic, physical attacks, and can make surrounding animals go berserk with her. Here's a gameplay video of how the I.P.D can react (with bonus Jacqli and Cloche singing!)
Going further into what I.P.Ds are, I.P.D stands for "Infel Phira Dependency," meaning they are dependent on the Infel Phira server for everything. While the other Towers also have A.T.Ds (Ar Tonelico Dependent) reyvateils or H.D (Harvestasha Dependent), they do not suffer the same problems as I.P.Ds as their servers are much more stable.
The Infel Phira, as well as being the Song Server/SH server for all I.P.Ds, it has 5 different forms; one that was virtually succeeded into different forms. Sarre Mode is its native state when it isn't being controlled by the I.P.D Queen. Replekia Mode amplifies Song Magic depending on how many I.P.Ds decide to let themselves be used - they use a specific port to do so without risking their Soulspace/Cosmosphere open to attacks. This is utilized by Cloche when she sings METHOD_REPLEKIA/. and the aforementioned mini-game brings some I.P.Ds into the Lady Cloche Fanclub (max in-game is 100) who will willingly sing and amplify Replekia for the Maiden. Metafalica Mode is only seen at the end of the game, and the Infel Phira is repurposed as a basis for land to form around it when Metafalica is sung correctly and is actually executed. Replekia Mode is what actually triggers the Song Magic. It's really just a giant orbital laser. But because there's no Infel Phira around in Verens, well... there's no way a Real Replekia would actually be possible. If she can figure out how to craft different Song Magic in Verens (by getting a large regain of a Dive Machine and someone who can run the machine itself or if she has the time to sort through some of her remaining issues herself to be able to craft it which would probably be more likely) it could be possible depending on who she's Diving with, and if she even gets to that point with trust in people, the more I think of it.
I'm not sure if I mentioned the Infelsphere anywhere, but that's not something Cloche can access herself without Luca around, but I'll mention what it is and it's purpose on the off-chance Luca appears. The Infelsphere is a place only the Maiden of Mio (Cloche) and the Maiden of Homura (Luca) can access through a Dive (I'm not entirely sure if it's in the Infel Phira but my guess is yes, there's no wiki entry for me to do a quick lookup) between the two. In this place they see each other's pasts and in turn learn to strengthen their bonds, trust one another, and become closer overall. It's needed to sing Metafalica at the end of the game, since if they don't trust each other and open themselves up to each other, it will fail.
I know Diquility is mentioned, but Cloche is in a weird place with this. In game she's already taken her doses and likely would not need it in Verens, assuming things like that are removed. 3rd gen reyvateils (and in turn, I.P.Ds) need a life-extended agent every few months or else their bodies break down and they die, and Diquility is that agent.
More on I.P.Ds here, the Infel Phira here, Dives and Diving in general here, Replekia's in-game system and what it does here, as well as a little info on the song itself here with an added bonus of part of the Rhaplanca story as its feelings within the song, Replekia in action, how the I.P.Ds connect with Cloche and how the Infel Phira changes shape from the end of the game (which contain some mild spoilers on the end boss if you start from the beginning,) and if you're interested, the song itself as Cloche sings it in New Testament of Pastalie, also to serve as how different it is from the other Hymmnos presented in this. :)
I THINK THAT'S IT THOUGH? If anything else needs clarification, let me know and I'll go into more detail for you! o7
