[ applications: canon characters ]
OC Applications are here
IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.
Before applying, please be sure to read the following:
We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!
⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉
Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"
⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉
Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:
Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.
Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.
Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.
Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.
Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.
⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉
We have two sample requirements.
General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.
Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.
The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.
The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:
Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.
Questions: If you have any questions, ask them here.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:
- Read the Rules and the Game Information.
- Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
- RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
- Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
- Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
- You may apply for up to two characters per month.
- Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
- Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
- Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
- If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
- Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
- Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:
- Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
- Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
- Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Revision
We would like a clearer explanation of the timeline Hank is taken from for the sake of our canonblind app mods. Additionally, there are some spelling and grammatical errors that we would like to see fixed.
Please submit your revisions as its own comment in reply to this one. You have one week to submit the revisions, otherwise we will consider it a revocation of your application. If you have any questions or concerns, ask away!

I've also cleaned up his application in terms of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. I'll recopy the personality section below, but feel free to take a look at the entire application if you'd like. Thank you once again!
Personality:
First a tiny bit of history to explain his personality;
Hank was fully alive once. Part of Detroit Police Department's finest, he was a true hard-boiled, brilliant and self-sacrificing policeman that many looked up to. Hank had a knack for analyzing and understanding things, and quickly rose in the ranks of the police force; leading an operation to take down Red Ice (think cocaine but deadlier and even more addictive) cartels, and his brilliant work earned him the title of the youngest lieutenant in DPD history. However, the death of his six-year old son from a fatal car crash a few years ago left Hank to what he is now in Personality; a broken shell of a man who had been trying to slowly kill himself, loathing humanity and androids.
His resentment is in large part due to an android that had to operate on his son (and failed) in a life and death situation. However as the game progresses, he explains to Connor that the reason the android operated on his son was only because the human surgeon was too high on red ice to operate. With that in mind;
When one thinks of a fifty year old detective, typically you'd think grumpy, heavy drinker old man that does what he wants, comes into work when he wants...and with Hank this is pretty much what you'd get. In addition to this, he has ranked up warnings for the past few years for his misconduct, which he doesn't give a fuck about. He's gruff and his mouth is a hidden cache of all sorts of insults he is willing to fling your way if you piss him off. Hank has a dark sense of humor; visible in the many stickers he has on the panel of his work desk and even notes in his bathroom's mirror, or in the off-comments he sometimes says.
In a world of clean energy, electrical cars, technology and androids, Hank drives a gas-guzzling non-automatic car that's already ancient in the late 2010's and is a wonder in itself how it manages to still keep going (covered in more stickers of course), listens to hard metal rock (that's already ancient in the 2010s, do you see a pattern here), refuses to have an android, and his house's biggest technological marvel is his...curved TV. He loves books! He has vinyls! In 2030s! He barely cooks, only eats out and eats high caloric foods. He passes out often due to his high alcohol consumption and this leads to his late arrivals which leads to his reprimanding and...you probably see the pattern here. His dark descent caused him to become suicidal after his son's untimely death. He has a gun, separate from his work pistol, that has a single bullet. Most nights he plays 'Russian roulette' but is unable to pull the trigger because he's too afraid to do so. If his depression doesn't give him out, his body slowly threatens to do the deed, or his boss will finally fire. He's a mess.
Enter the android sent by CyberLife.
Due to all of this and unknown to Hank, his chief gave him the ongoing android deviant cases in the hope of relighting the flames of passion that once drove the lieutenant in being the best at his job. Let's just say that it looked like it was going to be a disaster at first - Hank didn't work well recently with others, but with an android - the very type of 'thing'that Hank blamed for the death of his son; well Connor might be a very expensive prototype, but Hank was not easily swayed. It is hard for anyone to be able to withstand Hank, but Connor somehow managed well. Slowly but surely, Connor and Hank started to act like a team, and Hank's personality shifted too.
At first using It to talk about Androids, Hank slowly started to address them properly as the game goes on, and by the end is fully convinced that they deserve as many rights as humanity. While this quote is not from the same path that I am taking Hank from, there's no doubt this Hank feels the same: "Deviant's blood may be a different color than mine, but they're alive." When Hank is stuck between two Connors at the end of the game; one that has gone deviant and another that hasn't, he's able to guess who is who by the fact Connor shows actual emotion and empathy while talking about Hank's son. Both androids would know Cole's name, but only the Connor he knows would tell Hank it wasn't his fault after what happened (although one can argue how did Hank miss that one had the 51 number and the other had a 60).
By the end of the game, Hank has started to become more the man he used to be...a hard-working officer who is willing to sacrifice himself to aid others, but it will take a good while for him to fully return to what he was. He gets angry when they are taken off the case, he doesn't mind causing a distraction at the risk of losing his job so that Connor can finish the investigation on his own so that the Android isn't put offline. By now, he thinks of Connor as a partner rather than a tool to be dragged around from crime scene to crime scene, and has a fresher look at both androids and maybe even humanity. Or well, at least towards himself.
However, while someone's self-destruction can be easy, rebuilding takes a lot more time - like the exercises he will need to do to remove all those pounds he gained. Maybe ending up in a place with less technology and magic will help him towards that.
Accepted!
