[ applications: canon characters ]
OC Applications are here
IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.
Before applying, please be sure to read the following:
We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!
⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉
Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"
⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉
Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:
Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.
Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.
Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.
Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.
Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.
⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉
We have two sample requirements.
General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.
Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.
The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.
The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:
Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.
Questions: If you have any questions, ask them here.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:
- Read the Rules and the Game Information.
- Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
- RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
- Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
- Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
- You may apply for up to two characters per month.
- Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
- Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
- Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
- If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
- Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
- Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.
We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:
- Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
- Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
- Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Re: Revision
Revamped personality:
Prompto Argentum is what happens when the left-out shy kid in a grade school class gets one shot at the brass ring of friendship. His parents are implied to be workaholics, leaving him to fend for himself in the evenings and making his home life as empty as his early social life. Once he succeeds in making a friend (who brings bonus friends), the connection, interaction, and care means the world to him, and he’d do anything for his friends. That includes improving the majority of his personality to make himself a better friend for them.
It’s not that he’s fake or forces himself to act in an unnatural manner, but Prompto’s always trying. He’s trying to find the bright side, to make his friends laugh, to be a good person. It comes naturally to him, but trying keeps everything he says turned up to 11.
And he has to keep himself at full throttle, because he’s never been comfortable in his own skin. He’s insecure about his place in the world and feels he’s ordinary to the point of being boring. He’s not noble, rich, strong or smart, and he fails to see his good qualities, believing himself to be unworthy. Prompto’s ever afraid that the amazing friends he lucked into will realize that the blond dude’s not on their level and ditch him. That it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t. He keeps himself constant pressure to remind everyone why they like him.
As a child, he was introverted and lonely, and life was huge empty stretches between class and dinner and sleep. Sometimes, he’d go through a whole day without talking to anyone. Now and for the past five years, he’s learned to be a chatterbox. There is always some conversation to insert himself in or start, someone to rib gently or compliment enthusiastically, or even a stupid song to sing. He doesn’t want to fade into the background and be the invisible kid that he used to be. He wants to be noticed, and he wants it to be on his terms.
His chosen role is somewhere between class clown and Arthur Fonzarelli. In regards to the former, Prompto has a good sense of humor, if he does say so himself, and he trots it out whenever and wherever possible. Puns and wordplay, sarcasm and fingerguns. Even his fears are often tempered with as playful a delivery as he can muster. He knows what they’re trying to do (in essence, save the world) isn’t going to be easy. So many people have died already that it’s hard to not realize that this will probably end badly, but that doesn’t mean they all have to be miserable every step of the way.
As to the latter half of his role, Prompto likes to think of himself as a ladies man, but would secretly be happy being a lady's man. He knows that he doesn’t have Gladio’s gift at being a people person. He's like the human personification of Flynn Rider's smolder, although he does think that women mainly should be treated with kindness and deference. Bless him, he tries so hard. What he needs is someone who will tell him that he'd be cool without trying - and make him believe it.
He’s constantly restless, particularly when he’s in a position to be observed or judged. It’s the physical manifestation of his self-consciousness. He drums his fingers on a table or on his leg, scuffs his feet, rubs his neck, or attempts to strike just the right cool pose. The nervous energy extends to how he moves in combat. Despite being given a Kingsglaive uniform, he’s the least trained of Noctis’ retinue and is gangly in his dodges and rolls. He has to be that much quicker and try that much harder, even if he’s not as polished, because Prompto knows that he’s the weak one and he doesn’t want to just skate by and “concentrate on self defense” like he was told. He’s here to help his friends, not hinder them.
When he’s more still, that’s when his brain is working over time. He’ll stare off at the night sky at camp, thinking about how he got here or wondering if his parents made it out of Insomnia okay. But he keeps this part of him - the part that has bone-deep worries and insecurities - wrapped up pretty tight. When it does come up, Prompto apologizes for bringing up his hang-ups, seemingly unaware that his friends may not mind the opportunity to support him. Prompto doesn’t think he’s here, with these royal or brilliant and talented friends, because of his concerns or kindness. He’s here because he’s fun and easy-going, and so that is what he endeavours to be at all times.
Whether he sees it or not, it is in huge part his kindness that makes people want to be his friend. Noctis didn't befriend him because Prompto worked out and ditched his glasses to have his omg-now-he's-pretty movie moment. He befriended him because Prompto was the only person who treated him like a normal person instead of “Your Highness”. Or because Prompto's the sort of person who constantly takes others into account and puts them first. It's his willingness to move in front of Gladio to protect the big guy when he's been knocked down or his quietly guiding a blinded Ignis without making a big deal out of it. He ran the car off the road so he could tend to an injured cub. The humour, the swagger, the techie skills - they're bonuses, but they're not worth as much as being a good person down to the core.
He’s also very determined. Overcoming shyness and losing a lot of weight are both difficult tasks, and he really worked hard on the latter. Running gave him some confidence, and accomplishing the task afforded him some pride. It goes further than that, though; he’s downright dogged when it comes to not giving up hope that the four of them can make everything right again, somehow. What it takes to break his resolve and fall into misery is a fairly massive series of traumas (being accidentally on purpose shoved off a moving train on a bridge by his best friend, almost freezing to death, finding he’s a clone meant to be transformed into a “soulless” MT soldier, the body horror of seeing other clones in the stages of daemon transformation, killing his creator/primary genetic donor, and realizing that he’s killed dozens, if not hundreds, of versions of himself). Despite his collapsing into tears, it doesn’t take much cajoling to put him back on track.
He’s something of a peacemaker of the quartet, as if his anxiety about his friends turning on him also extends to anxiety on them turning on each other and costing him friends by proxy. He tries to intercede when two of his friends get into a nasty argument, chides when one friend is rude to someone Prompto hoping to, ahem, befriend, and holds his breath while helping Ignis navigate caves, because they can’t leave him behind and he doesn’t want Gladio to notice the assist.
He's a shutterbug. "Camera addict" might not actually be a recognized affliction, but he has a problem. Yes, Prompto takes very nice pictures, his friends enjoy looking at them, a camera is a great way to meet people but seriously, he probably keeps it in his underwear because it DEFINITELY does not fit in his skinny jeans and you don't have to equip the camera bag, that's all I'm saying. Kidding aside, he has an eye for beautiful scenery and action shots. Including mid-battle selfies, which he gets away with because he's the ranged fighter and pretty nimble, so no one chews him out for being reckless. Much.
The camera is a nice social prop, as well, to make him feel like part of whatever group he's with. He's the self-appointed archivist. He's the one getting them to crowd together for group shots for him to save and hoard as proof of continued friendship. It helps cover for some of his geekiness, although he doesn't try to hide it. He flaunts his geek, singing chocobo songs, humming the FF victory tune, playing video games and asking his buds to play with him.
Speaking of chocobos, he absolutely adores the birds. He might even love them more than cruising around in the Regalia. If it’s a soft, cuddly, fluffy pet, Prompto wants it.
As a final aside, if it was for anyone but Noctis, Prompto would have never agreed to a camping road trip that morphed into a quest to save the world that features an alarming amount of cliffs and caves. He’s afraid of heights and confined spaces. He also hates bugs and dirt. Surprise! There’s a ton of those outdoors too. Joy!
Emotion Sample: The same TDM thread as the general sample. Prompt A has the emotions changing the area:
"The white snowflakes clinging to his blond hair try to be yellow instead, but the best any of them can manage is a washed-out, half-hearted blue."
It continues further down the thread as his thoughts and emotions continue to change the snow’s colour:
"The brushed off snow is solidly purple by the time it hits the ground, but Prompto’s staring at Noct like he never thought he’d see him again.
Which... he didn’t. He half expects some inbred coding to take over to attack the Lucian king, and a purple blue galaxy of decay to eat away at his face. He doesn’t - he knows he’d never let that happen. He’s not one of them. "
And yet again here:
"Hey Noct, I'm a self-murdering evil soldier who is highly susceptible to Starscourge, we still cool?
Six, no. He won't put that on Noct.
But the purple snow comment helps him dodge, and Prompto quirks an eyebrow and looks down, just in time to see it flash to white, then back to purple, then white, then a slightly softer purple. It keeps going down to a lavender colour.”
Accepted!
