[ applications: canon characters ]

— APPLICATIONS ARE ALWAYS OPEN

Reserves OPEN
OC Applications are here

IMPORTANT! We are officially in endgame until August 31, 2020. Applications are on a rolling basis. There is a small "block" period from the 1st through the 4th of every month to allow a bulk of apps to be submitted, and then applications can be submitted at any time during the month. Notices will be sent out all at once after the first "block" period, and then between 24 hours to the end of the weekend depending on how many and our schedule. Applications are guaranteed to be processed during the weekends.

Before applying, please be sure to read the following:

  • Read the Rules and the Game Information.
  • Double check the Reserves and Taken Characters lists (A-M | N-Z) to make sure the character you're applying for is not on the list. Also check the comments in case the entry has yet to be updated, as well as any pending applications.
  • RETURNING PLAYERS! You only need to submit any old application. Does not matter how long ago, as long as it was accepted and you have good standing (ie, not banned), it will be valid.
  • Feel free to use the most recent test drive both for practice as well as to use for samples. IMPORTANT! If you submit threads as samples, you must submit the application with that character journal. This is the only way we can ensure that the samples are from you and not someone else.
  • Linked samples must have been made within the past year.
  • You may apply for up to two characters per month.
  • Application challenges are allowed. Reserves will have priority, but it's not definitive. We will choose the better application regardless.
  • Do not plagiarize. If we find that the information provided was directly taken by either another player or source material such a wiki, the application will be rejected immediately. If we find this after processing the application, we will revoke the application and have you removed from the game with potential ban.
  • Reusing content from your own applications from other games is allowed. However, the application must follow our format, and we ask any original written samples to conform to our game. That is, we don't want to read samples that are set specifically for another game's premise. Note: this does not apply to threads linked from other games used as samples.
  • If you are rejected, you cannot reapply for the same character for two weeks. However, you can apply for a different character in that timeframe.
  • Those accepted must fill out all of the required entries within a week to be considered part of the game. Otherwise, we will consider it a revocation of the application.
  • Fill out the form and comment to this entry! You can either paste the application directly to the entry or link it from your own journal/musebox.

We have compiled sample applications from our players to show what the mod team and the application moderators are looking for in terms of writing quality and depth. We hope you find these samples useful!

⌈ PLAYER SECTION ⌉

Player:
Contact: Journal/Plurk/AIM — anything to help identify since someone might share your name handle.
Age: You must be at least 13 years old to apply.
Current Characters: If a new player, just put "N/A"

⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:
Age:
Canon:
Canon Point:

Background: We do not need a play by play of their life. You can of course provide one, but it's not necessary. A summary of their role in the canon and important events involving their character will suffice. Wiki links are allowed.

Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.

Abilities: If there are any particular abilities the character has supernatural or otherwise, list them here. Referencing to a wiki list is acceptable. However, if there are any particular abilities that need to be weakened or removed, note them here.

Alignment: Please refer to the Alignment entry to choose which alignment your character would most likely fall under. Include a brief (a couple of sentences max) just to help explain why you think your choice is the best fit.

Other: Anything else you'd like to mention.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

We have two sample requirements.

General Sample: We should see examples of the character's dialogue as well as some introspection or additional narrative to further show how you intend to write the character. This is the most important part of the sample and where most of the weight will be.

Emotion Sample: This is our "game setting" requirement. Essentially we want to ensure that you have a basic grasp of the game's premise, especially with the use of emotions. It can be a small scene, even incidental to the main sample. A reminder that apathetic characters will also create effects, such as loss of color, surface distortion, holes forming. This section doesn't have to be lengthy, but the effect must be clear for us to see.

The emotion sample can be part of the general character sample. If so, please link directly or directly quote that portion so that it's easier for us to quickly find it.

The samples can be "written" in three different ways and you can choose which one will work best for you:

  1. Test Drive. You can utilize our test drive to cover both requirements of the sample. So long as there is enough character portrayal and a scene with an emotional reaction, be it within the prompt or done during the thread, then it can be used for both.
  2. Link out + Written. You can link to threads/entries from other games, memes, or museboxes to show character portrayal, and then write an additional short scene for the emotion portion of the sample.
  3. Original Sample. You can write a complete sample that shows both character portrayal and a scene involving emotion use. This can be one sample or two separate samples. If you opt to write an original sample, you are welcome to use any prompts from any of our Test Drives, Intro Logs, Task Board, and even past events. You are also free to change things up and are not restricted to any of these prompts. They are just here to help offer ideas.

Format wise, you can use either [ brackets ] OR narrative prose. We do require that the writing at least be coherent, have proper sentence structure, and is mostly grammatically correct (we realize that writing styles can be loose/creative in [ bracket ] form so we're giving a bit more leeway). One last suggestion we have is try to have the character interacting with the environment and try thinking of the sample less of a narrative piece but more like a post or thread prompt you might make in the game. That will help the sample show not only how you will write the character, but also how you will play them in practice.

Questions: If you have any questions, ask them here.

Aw man. I'm sorry to make so much work for you guys. It's been a while since I've written a fresh app. I must have gotten rusty. So would you like to me just rewrite the app for the clarity and spelling issues, as well as address your questions at that point? I started writing out the revisions but I want to hit all of the issues.

Edit: I could repost the section with the fixes bolded if that works for you.

Gon is, in short, a shounen protagonist in an uncaring world. He’s very energetic and stubborn, goal-oriented, clever, and strong. But he doesn’t always get his way, even if he specifically wants things his way and under the best circumstances. He claims that he’s just selfish like that and accepts it of himself. In multiple instances, Gon has had on screen arguments with people about trying to get his way, even with his opponents.

When he’s doing life-or-death dodgeball he could have won in a way that didn’t injure his best friend, but he felt absolute victory instead of technical victory required it. When it turned out that his father’s student survived something, he was still very upset because he wanted him to be rescued through his direct efforts, and wanted things to go as he planned. The earliest example is that he was in a fight with someone and he needed to win to progress, but he refused to have the person stronger than him simply forfeit. He wanted to win properly and on his terms.

This is a peculiar trait since he had never asked for anything before realizing he wanted to be a Hunter, aka an elite fighter/finder/problem solver. The world’s governments seem to rely on them for everything important, and they are often hired as bodyguards for the wealthy, from princes to mafia members.

Gon is a mixture of unflinching towards death and violence, but intensely empathetic towards those he has met and views as a friend. He definitely enjoys fighting, action, and having to problem solve. He is exhilarated by the adrenaline that accompanies it where most normal people would flee for their lives.

His best friend, Killua, is a “former”-assassin who has killed people in front of him, and Gon has not reacted in a strongly negative way. He accepts him, but only because he’s a friend. He has reacted unsympathetically towards killers in the past. This is because Killua is Gon’s first and best friend. They clicked instantly upon meeting each other during the Hunter Exam, by virtue of being the same age. He views friendship so sacred that he cannot respect others who disrespect their comrades. When facing off against some deadly opponents that had been killing and causing problems, he signified that the unforgivable part of them was that they called one another trash.

When faced with seemingly impossible circumstances, he never shies away. In fact, the impossibility seems to egg him on. When told he will have to face someone who will absolutely kill him, he just becomes excited for the hunt, and immediately creates a plan to deal with it. For instance: a famous murderer got paired up with him multiple times for licensing and combat, and Gon never gave up, even if he had the option to avoid death by simple forfeit. He was so excited to figure out a way to beat him and on his own terms that he didn’t seem to care that he could die doing it.

Although he is described as simple-minded and straightforward by everyone who meets him, he is still extremely clever. He just happens to be forthright. He is a great learner and incorporates new things he learns into his strategies all the time. For instance, after learning about different counterfeiting methods, Gon was able to use something riffing on that to break a puzzle that would have prevented his group from finishing a task. Part of that is born from his need to have things go his way.

Gon has a very grey morality born of his background and being totally surrounded by similar people. The guys who come in to save the day in his world are usually only doing it for the pay or fame, and tend to be assholes. Only weirdos tend to be Hunters generally since it requires a high tolerance for pain, violence, and fear.

Gon’s own dad is running from him, partially so he doesn’t have to be a dad, and partially to make Gon a worthy hunter. This has had some serious consequences for Gon’s personality. Gon does not hold his dad properly accountable for abandoning him. He thinks he’s super cool and wants to understand how awesome his job must be to have been to want to abandon his own child. Seeking to understand his father, Ging, in this way indicates that he views this as fine behavior. Most other people who encounter Ging think he’s a total asshole or a moron for doing this and conducting himself in this way.

Gon's intense desire to have a father in his life also made him latch onto another character so hard that it caused a rift between him and his best friend that did not seem to be entirely repaired by the series conclusion. This was also Ging's doing, in a slightly roundabout way, but Gon never holds him accountable for it. He blames himself entirely for his own actions leading to his father-figure's death instead of placing the fault appropriately with the adults that have created the situation he's stuck in.

Gon accepts many awful things as permissible and has bad boundaries for himself and others. He seems to think abuse and neglect are fine ways to try to form another person, and are just a natural course to hone abilities. He puts this on others as well, allowing Killua to destroy his hands in order to let him win a game.

He allows others to harm him when just words would suffice. Even his father figure, Kite, is praised by both Ging and Gon for punching Gon in the face as a child to punish him for trespassing in a wild animal’s territory. He praised those actions in a way that indicates that he would do this to another if he were mentoring them.

Gon also doesn’t seem that mad to watch this same guy, Kite, punch his best friend to remove a deadly ant from his leg. Kite could have 100% told Killua to not touch the bug and deal with it, but people who have to deal with Ging are so embroiled in violence that this is permissible.

Gon is a great kid at heart, but all of his friends, enemies, his dad and father-figures are from this world of violence and riddle-like methods of teaching. Ging has taught Gon that he can overcome things on his own merit to a totally dangerous degree, and that he can accept these terms from others.
